A former city employee pleaded guilty on Wednesday to embezzling money from the city of Picayune.
In a press release from the Mississippi Office of the State Auditor, 49-year-old Gregory Madison Kerr pleaded guilty to the charge of falsifying his time sheets by reporting hours he didn’t work. At the time, he was a part-time employee for the city’s public works department, Picayune Public Works Director Eric Morris said.
Kerr was indicted in 2014 for appropriating money from the city, which occurred from April 2012 through his termination on July 2, 2012, according to the press release.
“When we became aware of his fraudulent activities we reported it immediately to the state auditor who carried out the investigation,” Picayune City Manager Jim Luke said.
In the press release, State Auditor Stacey Pickering said her office will continue to hold people who abuse the system accountable for their actions.
Kerr was sentenced to five years of non-adjudicated probation. Additionally, he’s facing $4,518 in fines and restitutions and ordered to pay $868 to the city of Picayune, the release reported.
