A home was struck by lighting and an oak tree fell on a car, but no serious damage or injuries were reported as a result of Monday’s rainstorm.
Marty Lee lost a tree in his yard during the storm, and that tree fell right on his wife’s new car. Lee said she got the car about six months ago after her previous vehicle was struck by another vehicle while parked on Goodyear Boulevard.
Now, the car that replaced the one damaged on Goodyear also has to be repaired or replaced. Lee said he was waiting for insurance representatives to check out the damage before he could do anything else.
He was alerted to the damage by his wife, who was home during the storm. When he pulled up to the house he couldn’t see the car at first.
“I knew our car was somewhere under there when I pulled up from the school,” Lee said. “But it could have been a lot worse, it could have fell on the house.”
While the house was not severely damaged, the tree did take out the power lines connected to the home. Power company crews were there shortly after the storm passed to restore the connection.
Pearl River County Emergency Operations Director Danny Manley said the only other damage reported to his office entailed a home on Brentwood Drive being struck by lightning, causing damage to the home’s electrical system. He said while there were no flames reported, emergency responders did find smoke coming from the home.
No vehicle accidents or injuries were reported to his office.
“We got lucky is what we got,” Manley said.
Monday’s storm brought .58 inches of rain to the south end of the county. Forecasts predicted more than two inches would fall.
An 80 percent chance of rain is predicted for Tuesday, with the rest of the week forecast to be either cloudy or clear.
