The Oscar Gelpi Council 6872 of the Knights of Columbus will be barbecuing for a noble cause.
The Knights will host a barbecue chicken dinner fundraiser on Wednesday, May 13 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall on 408 Carroll St.
“This is something we’ve been wanting to do for a while so we might make it an annual thing from now on. This really is just a fun fundraising project that will help local agencies,” said Bryan Cassagne, grand chief of the Knights of Columbus.
The council is partnering with eight community organizations, including Sav-A-Life Pregnancy Support Services, the Senior Center of South Pearl River County, Picayune Lions Club, the ARC of Pearl River County, St. Charles Borromeo Catholic School, Bridgeway Apartments, Picayune Kiwanis Club and Kids Hub Child Advocacy Center.
Currently, tickets can be purchased from the organizations involved for $8 per plate, Cassagne said.
He hopes they will sell all 1,000 tickets.
The proceeds from the fundraiser will go directly to each organization, Cassagne said.
Carolyn Robinson, customer service representative at Sav-A-Life, said they will use the money to purchase supplies and tests for their patients.
While Ray Mitchell, president of Picayune Kiwanis Club, said they plan to use the proceeds for future events.
“Our club serves special needs children and so we’ll place our share of the proceeds into our general fund for our annual events like our Special Olympics and fishing tournament,” Mitchell said.
Besides barbecued chicken, there will also be live music, invocations from local ministers, barbecue sides, including coleslaw and baked beans and drinks at the fundraiser. Participants can opt to dine-in or take-out, Cassagne said.
