A community complaint of a suspicious vehicle in a residential area brought Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department deputies into contact with three suspects who were later charged with drug related crimes.
Sheriff David Allison said the call of the suspicious vehicle came into the department on March 31, after a resident noticed a vehicle parked near her home. The complainant told law enforcement officials that she suspected the occupants of the vehicle were watching her children as they played outside.
Deputies and a narcotics investigator responded to the area, but found the vehicle had already left the area. After the complainant gave a direction of travel, the vehicle was located outside of a business along U.S. 11.
Allison said the deputies and investigators approached the vehicle and found four people inside the vehicle. A search was conducted due to the complaint.
In the search the officers found 40-year-old Carol McClain of 1819 Johnny King Street in possession of morphine and a syringe, 38-year-old Shalee Nowell of 488 Anchor Lake Road to be in possession of methamphetamine and that she had two outstanding warrants with the sheriff’s department for DUI and no driver’s license and 45-year-old Kelvin Nowell of 208 Dairy St., Poplarville was in the possession of methamphetamine and a knife, which was a violation of his parole as a convicted felon, Allison said.
As the officers spoke with the occupants of the vehicle, it was determined that they were not watching the children, but rather a good Samaritan was providing the three occupants with a ride to the store to purchase supplies, but they got lost and stopped to call for directions. While calling for directions to pick up friends, they parked in front of the complainant’s house, Allison said.
McClain was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia. She was additionally charged during booking with tampering with physical evidence because corrections officers found additional methamphetamine hidden on her person, Allison said.
Kelvin Nowell was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a weapon by a convicted felon, Allison said.
Shalee Nowell was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and for the warrants, Allison said.
The driver of the vehicle was released since he was not involved with the contraband found on the occupants, Allison said.
