The Pearl River Community College softball team is trading their school colors for green in honor of their coach during next Saturday’s game at the Wildcat Stadium against Jones Community College.

On Saturday, April 11 at noon, the team will compete and raise money as they promote lymphoma cancer awareness. Currently, the team is selling green T-shirts to raise money for the cause.

“The team normally raises awareness for cancer every year, like breast cancer, but two years ago it hit close to home for us when our coach was diagnosed with cancer,” PRCC Athletic Secretary Donna Herndon said.

In 2013, PRCC softball Coach Leigh White was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. During that time, the team raised money for lymphoma cancer research by selling purple shirts.

A year later, White underwent a successful bone marrow transplant and she’s currently in remission.

“The color green represents the type of bone marrow transplant White underwent,” Herndon said.

Last year, the team raised $5,500 through T-shirt sales and donations.

“We’re hoping to get even more this year,” Herndon said. “The proceeds will go the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, where White got her transplant done and it will also go to the softball team.”

The green T-shirts are available for purchase until tomorrow.

“But we’ll probably order more shirts and sell them at the game on Saturday as well,” Herndon said.
