Mississippians can enjoy live music and barbecued food at this year’s Rockin and Grillin Palooza hosted by the Picayune Main Street.

The outdoor event takes place Saturday, April 11 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. in historic downtown Picayune on West Canal Street.

Picayune Main Street Director Reba Beebe said this is the first year the city is hosting a BCA state-sanctioned barbecue grilling competition.

“We’ve done a jambalaya cook-off in the past, but this is the first time we’re doing barbecue,” Beebe said. “Right now we’ve got 20 teams registered but there’s room for more.”

The grand champion winner will qualify for the Invitational Jack Daniels’ Competition in Lynchburg, Tenn.

Beginning at 11 a.m., various musical acts will perform, including local singers Kamryn Kinchen, Alex Ramsey and Makenzie Holmes along with the bands Rock Candy and Runaway Train.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Boulevard Cruisers of Picayune will host the classic car show, which will be located at North and South Main Street near the railroad tracks. The car show is limited to 150 cars.

“But we’ll find room for them if we do get over the limit,” Mickey Penton, member of the Boulevard Cruisers, said.

There’s a $25 fee to enter the car show. Awards will be given out for the best engine, best paint, top 50 and best of show. To register, contact Mickey Penton at (985) 290-2684.

“Hopefully it’ll be a great event where people can have fun,” Beebe said.

Picayune Main Street will be selling T-shirts for the event prior to and during the event.
