Local students can opt to spend their summer vacation this year at the Picayune Police Department Summer Camp, which has been in operation for the past 13 years.

Capt. Theresa Milar said the summer camp is a great way for kids to interact with one another, participate in fun activities and receive educational lessons from local police officers.

“Not only do we do the fun stuff like take trips to go rock climbing, bowling and fishing. We also teach classes on electrical safety, beekeeping, drug education and manners at the camp,” Milar said.

Beginning April 13 at 8 a.m., camp applications will be made available at the Picayune Police Department.

Milar said entry to the camp is on a first come, first served basis.

“We’re doing two camps this year, and each camp is limited to 50 kids,” she said.

The first camp will begin on Monday, June 8 to the 12 and will be held at Roseland Park Elementary School. The camp is for ages 7, 8 and 9.

The second camp will begin on Monday, June 22 to the 26 and will be held at Roseland Park Elementary School. The camp is for ages 10, 11 and 12.

“The camp is free of charge, since local businesses, service groups and individuals can sponsor a child to attend our camp,” Milar said.

At the end of both sessions, each child will be awarded a participation certificate, Milar said.
