When Krystal Rivet moved to Poplarville from Westwego, La. last year, she immediately noted that the city was in need of more businesses that sold treats for kids of all ages.
That’s when she and fiancé Marshall Deshotel decided to purchase her father’s Westwego ice cream parlor WeGeaux Treats.
“The shop was unsuccessful in Westwego,” Rivet said. “And rather than see the equipment fall into someone else’s hands, we decided to make the purchase. We wanted to do something nice for our community.”
Rivet is a graduate of West Jefferson High and Delgado Community College, where she majored in biomedical engineering.
After college, she worked as loan processor in New Orleans.
“Living here in Poplarville is a blessing,” Rivet said. “It’s great to be out of the city, I couldn’t be happier.”
After moving to Poplarville, she found employment with a real estate agency and her current business location. She began construction on WeGeaux Treats in August of this year.
Rivet offers a variety of both sweet and salty treats including hot and iced coffee, which are available in 10 different flavors as well as two sugar-free options.
Patrons can try a java chip, caramel or mocha frappuccino. Rivet also offers lattes, cappuccinos and chai tea.
Children can choose from non-coffee blended drinks. Flavors include bubble gum, cotton candy and orange dream.
For those not in the mood for a caffeinated pick-me-up, they can opt for a milkshake or malt made with Blue Bell Ice Cream.
Ice cream is also sold by the cone or cup and can be made into a sundae or banana split.
If patrons aren’t in the mood for something sweet, they can purchase hot dogs, nachos, popcorn or boiled peanuts.
The supplies in her store are all purchased from local merchants including Country Girl Creamery.
“We like to spend our money locally,” Rivet said. “I want this to be a one-stop shop for families and a place where the young adults can come and hang out.”
WeGeaux Treats is open Tuesday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
