Those 50 volunteers are estimated to have collected about a ton of trash from the creek.
Some of the collected debris included glass and plastic bottles, car tires and wheels, 55 gallon plastic drum, metal handrail from a staircase and a tent.
Friends of Boley president Keith Kingrey said the most unusual item taken from the creek was a Cragar drag racing wheel and tire possibly from the 1960s.
Kailey Bernius said she and her group found a small rake, light bulbs, Styrofoam, shoes and a lot of old bottles.
Ricky Saul said he and his son found the 55-gallon drum lodged in the sand and the metal staircase railing. In order to remove the drum he had to use the creek water to remove the sand.
Other items removed from the creek included a baseball helmet, liquor bottles and a message in a bottle.
The message in the bottle contained only a name and phone number. The message read “Justin Isenberg, call now. You are lucky,” and included a self-portrait and graphic of a message in a bottle. Volunteers on scene estimate the bottle was from the 1980s. The phone number listed on the note did not appear to work.
