As I spend more time in Pearl River County I get to meet more people. It’s probably one of the true perks of being a reporter.

I usually only see the same people over and over again because I attend the same meetings or events in the same place, but recently I’ve been able to branch out.

While it’s always great to see the regulars at the government meetings and education meetings, it’s been nice to see some new faces.

It’s not just meeting new people, but also the greetings I receive when we first meet.

Last week I did the city employee get to know segment on a wonderful woman, Mary Paige.

Mrs. Mary was reluctant at first for me to take her picture, but once we started talking, she quickly warmed up to the idea. After I finished interviewing her, she said, “I have to give you a hug.”

I personally love getting hugs and Mrs. Mary’s hug was perfect. It brought a smile to my face and put me in such a great mood that I carried for the rest of the week.

I find that a lot of people in Pearl River County like to hug and I’m always willing to accept.

To me hugs should be a form of currency.

I started thinking back on the 11 months I have spent in the county and remembered there have been so many people that have greeted me with hugs.

I’ve even come to look forward to hugs from some people I see on a regular basis.

To me, a hug means you accept me and want to welcome me.

It also shows just how friendly and welcoming people are in the county.

So to anyone who has ever given me a hug or even a high five or a smile, thank you.

Sometimes these little things make all the difference.
