Additional work to fix drainage problems near Carroll Street and U.S. 11 was completed Wednesday.

The work began Monday and involved employees of the Mississippi Department of Transportation digging up a drainage pipe in order to install a new one.

MDOT Maintenance Manager Vincent Necaise said the work aimed to fix the drainage problem in the area caused by a clogged and collapsed drainpipe. The pipe runs from the intersection of Carroll Street and U.S. 11 to the Hobolochitto Creek.

Picayune Public Works Director Eric Morris said MDOT attempted to fix the problem about a week ago by digging out the ditch near the intersection of the two streets. However, after a heavy rain occurred after the work, the water still did not drain properly. In response MODT came back out to address the ongoing problem.

“The work they performed previously helped but did not resolve the issue,” Morris said. “The work performed now will, I believe.”

Morris said the work entailed removing the damaged section of the drainpipe, which involved digging up the area. Once the new section was installed it was tied into the rest of the system.
