AFRICAN CATTLE

Mark Gibson, whose immaculate spread is just off Sycamore Road east of Picayune, imported a herd of cattle with unusually long horns, and no, they’re not Texas Long Horns. They’re called Watusi, and imported from Kenya, says Gibson. Bulls weigh up to 2,500 lbs. and the cattle thrive here. With the long horns, which can measure up to eight feet tip-to-tip, the cattle look ferocious but they are gentle, Gibson says. The first Watusi were imported into the U.S. in the 1960s, but thanks to breeders like Gibson, they are now widespread throughout North America. (Photo by David A. Farrell)
