The Distinguished Young Women of Pearl River County program is not only a scholarship program for young women in Pearl River County, but also an organization that strives to give back to the community and foster the development of community minded individuals.
This year’s program includes 13 young ladies that will vie for the title of Pearl River County’s Distinguished Young Woman 2013. The contestants began preparing and practicing in October in addition to participating in team building and skill building activities.
On Saturday, October 29th, the ladies delivered food that they had collected to the Christian Care Ministries of Picayune. The ladies collected canned and dry goods as part of their community service project. The 13 young ladies collected over 500 food items for the Picayune food bank.
Community service is an important part of the Distinguished Young Women program which encourages community involvement as part of its “Be your best self” platform. The “Be your best self” platform values include: be healthy, be involved, be studious, be ambitious and be responsible.
This year’s program will be held November 19 at 7 p.m. in the Picayune High School Auditorium. The contestants and volunteers encourage community members to show their support for these accomplished and civic minded young people.
Admission is $10 and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m
