Three local teams get big wins

Poplarville’s Lady Hornets bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 67-42 win over visiting Stone Tuesday night.

Policia Travis and Bretta Hart tallied 15 points apiece to pace Poplarville, while Daquari Raine added 11 and both Demi Beason and Rose Silas chipped in 10 points apiece to the winning cause as the Lady Hornets placed five players in double digits.

Poplarville is now 3-1 on the season.

The Poplarville boys weren’t as fortunate, as the Hornets drooped a 52-32 decision to the Tomcats.

Freddy Dickey scored 12 for Poplarville, which is now 0-3, and David Gilmore added 10.

• Picayune’s Lady Tide won on the road despite a sluggish perofmance Tuesday night, beating Purvis 40-30. Picayune is now 4-1 on the year.

“We had a very poor night shooting, and we just kind of survived,” Picayune head coach Jason Kennedy said. “It was a win, and we’ll take it but we didn’t do a lot of things right.”

Andrea Jackson tallied a game high 28 for Picayune, almost equalling the point total for the entire Purvis team.

The Maroon Tide made it a clean sweep for Picayune on the night as they evened their record at 2-2 with a 46-37 win over Purvis.

Marcus Rawls tallied a game high 20 points for the Maroon Tide, which beat the Tornadoes for the second time in six days. Vince Gable added 11 points to the winning cause.

Both Picayune teams will compete in the county tournament beginning Thursday at Hancock High. The Lady Tide faces Slidell at 4 p.m., to kick the event off, while the Tide meets the host Hawks at 7:45 in the last game of the day.
