George County officials have agreed on May 8 as the date for a celebration of the county’s 100th birthday.
George County was created from Jackson County on March 16, 1910. The original courthouse, which is still in use, was erected in 1911.
Janet Eubanks, George County Centennial Committee spokeswoman, says committee members want each board of supervisors’ district to have its own building for exhibits and family histories.
Eubanks tells The Mississippi Press in Pascagoula that the committee is planning to hold Saturday sessions during which the public can bring in historical items to be scanned for display or published in a souvenir book under consideration.
Eubanks says planning has just begun and more work is needed.
