About 3,000 people are expected to participate in the 21st annual Mississippi Coastal Cleanup on Saturday.
Lauren Thompson, event coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, said there are 56 coastal cleanup sites, and volunteers with boats are also scheduled to pick up debris on Horn and Cat islands.
The cleanup is scheduled from 8 to 11 a.m.
In 2008, Thompson told The Mississippi Press there were 2,295 volunteers working 55 sites on the Mississippi coast. They picked up 142,235 pounds of debris.
