In unofficial returns Tuesday evening Democrat incumbent mayor Billy Spiers will face off against Republican Brad Necaise in the June 4 general election to decide the mayoral race.

Spiers, with 101 votes or 61.96 percent of the votes, out polled his Democratic opponent Poplarville Alderman W.M. “Bill” Winborn who had 62 votes or 38.04 percent of the votes.

All four Democratic aldermen-at-large candidates will appear on the June 4 ballot as there are five aldermen slots. The vote totals for the four are: John A. Grant, Jr. with 121 votes for 26.77 percent; Margaret Ann Smith, 115 votes or 25.44 percent; Shirley Wiltshire, 110 votes or 24.34 percent and Don Lee, 103 votes or 22.79 percent.

Democratic Executive Committee member Henry Hester received 135 votes, or 100 percent of the votes cast.

In the Republican mayoral contest, Brad Necaise received 224 votes or 81.16 percent to Everett Earl Lawrence’s 47 votes for 17.03 percent of the votes cast.

The Republican Alderman at large field of candidates was more crowded with eight candidates.

Jason Pearson received the most votes with 206 votes or 16.75 percent of the votes cast followed by Randy Brown, 185 votes or 15.04 percent; incumbent Byron L. Wells, 176 votes or 14.31 percent; and Keith Brown, 166 votes or 13.50 percent.

Those four will be on the June 4 General Election ballot.

The fifth slot will not be decided until affidavit votes are counted today and the possibility exists of a second primary runoff between incumbent alderman John Sherman and political newcomer Mark Bridgers.

Sherman polled 132 votes or 10.73 percent to Bridgers 129 votes or 10.49 percent.

The remaining Republican candidates and their totals are: Steve Colson, 127 votes, 10.33 percent and Benjamin Breland, 109 votes, 8.86 percent of votes cast.

If a runoff is necessary, it will be May 21 at the Poplarville City Hall.

The General Election will be June 4 at City Hall.
