A Pearl River County Sheriff’s Deputy spoke to three people Sunday evening for their alleged part in a physical altercation.

Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Shane Tucker said the department received a call at 6:40 p.m. Sunday about a fight in progress near Roy Road. When the deputy arrived, he found 44 year-old Roderick Jeffery Guerra surrounded and with cuts on his face.  The altercation had ended by that point.

Tucker said the deputy spoke with Guerra’s juvenile son who said that Guerra was hit in the head with a baseball bat by a juvenile wearing a red baseball cap. The deputy later found a youth fitting that description and was told by the juvenile that Guerra and Guerra’s son allegedly jumped into an already ongoing fight, but that he did not hit Guerra with a bat. The juvenile’s brother, also reportedly a juvenile, had what appeared to be a cut on his knee and told the same story to the deputy, Tucker said. Tucker said it was not clear how or when the juvenile suffered the cut to his knee.

The injured were taken to Highland Community Hospital for treatment and advised by the deputy that if they chose, they could file assault charges on the other party at the county Justice Court office, Tucker said.

No charges were pressed against Guerra or the juveniles by the Sheriff’s Department since the injuries were not life threatening and did not rise to the level of aggravated assault, Tucker said.
