Hitting the redial button gave Picayune Police Department investigators the information they needed to solve a residential burglary.

Saturday, at about 9:42 a.m., investigators were called out to a home located in the 2400 block of Laura Drive in response to a burglary. When officers arrived, they spoke to the complainant, who stated when he came home he noticed that someone had broken into his home, said Capt. Chad Dorn.

Evidence at the scene showed that the suspect apparently had gained entry through a rear window and left through the rear sliding glass door, Dorn said. Though a safe was found laying on its side, the suspect had failed to gain access, but the complainant did notice his cordless phone and a cowboy hat were missing, Dorn said.

A search of the home found the phone, but the battery was dead, the police captain said. Dorn said while investigators processed the scene, they charged the phone. Once it was charged, the investigators hit the redial button, coming into contact with someone who said earlier that day 19-year-old Craig Jones of 2700 Victoria Dr., had called and said he would be at that number all day, Dorn said.

Officers headed to Jones’ home, and found the missing cowboy hat in a vehicle to which Jones had access that was parked in front of the home, the police captain said. Dorn said a search of Jones also uncovered a bag of a green leafy substance believed to be marijuana. Jones was then taken into custody for possession of marijuana and residential burglary, Dorn said.
