Funeral services for Staff Sgt. Jerry Clark “Chip” Burge have been scheduled for this week.

Burge, 39, of Carriere, was assigned to the Second Battalion, Eighth Cavalry Regiment, First Brigade Combat Team, First Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas. Burge and a fellow troop member, Cpl. Joseph H. Cantrell IV, 23, of Ashland, Ky., died from wounds they suffered on Apr. 4 in Taji, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near the vehicle they were traveling in, according to the Department of Defense website.

The wake for Burge is at 5 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home chapel for family and from 6 to 9 p.m. for the public. The funeral procession is Thursday at 1:15 p.m. The city is urging residents to line up Goodyear Boulevard between the historic city hall and St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church at 1:15 p.m.

The funeral procession will go east on West Canal from McDonald Funeral Home to Main Street, where it will turn left onto Main Street, said Jon Myers, of the city’s public relations department. From there it will go to Goodyear Boulevard and turn left onto Goodyear. The procession then goes to Beech Street and turns left onto Beech. At the intersection of Beech Street and Palestine Road, the procession will turn right and head towards New Palestine Cemetery where internment will take place.

Burge’s remains arrive Stennis Airport at 12:13 p.m. Tuesday and will be escorted in to the funeral home, Myers said.

The flags for the City of Picayune have been lowered to half mast to honor the fallen soldier. City officials ask businesses and residents if they would do the same.
