Boys State elects officers

Rob Pyron of Copiah Academy was elected Tuesday as governor in the annual American Legion Boys State on the campus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College in Wesson.
Boys State, which runs through Friday, is a program designed to educate high school students about state government and politics, and to encourage participation in both.
Gov. Haley Barbour will meet Wednesday with the delegates in Jackson.
Pyron defeated Jud Roberts of New Albany High School in the governor’s race. In the lieutenant governor’s race, Jeremy Anderson of Moss Point defeated Grand Krag of Hattiesburg High.
Brandon Self of Madison Ridgland Academy beat Jake Fusia of St. Stanislaus for the secretary of state post.
The new Boys State attorney general is Ernest Taylor of Bay High who beat LaBrandon Pickett of Pascagoula High.
Zachary Fetcko of Wesson High defeated Herston Williamson of Starkville Academy for auditor, while Drew Leggett of West Jones bested Dashun Bell of Jackson Wingfield for treasurer.
In a razor-thin race for Insurance Commissioner, Luther Woodland of Moss Point won over Ryan Smith of Vancleave High and in the agriculture commissioner race, Corey Sewell defeated South Pontotoc High over Bailey West of Hollandale.
Delegates will be sworn in Wednesday.
