Authorities say a student shot himself in the head at a Louisiana middle school after he fired at a teacher and missed.

Sgt. Lesley Peters, a spokeswoman for the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office, says the student shot at the teacher Monday inside Larose-Cut Off Middle School. He then went behind a stairwell and shot himself.

She says the student has been taken to a hospital.

Peters says the school about 45 miles southwest of New Orleans has been locked down. She says all other students have been accounted for.

Sheriff Craig Webre says he believes the student is 15 years old. His name has not been released.

The shooting is still under investigation.
