The Mississippi River has topped flood stage in Greenville and could continue to rise this week.
Peter Nimrod, chief engineer of the Board of Mississippi Levee Commissioners, says officials are keeping an eye on the river but don’t anticipate major problems.
He says the water is affecting farmers.
Nimrod says forecasts call for the Mississippi River to crest at 50.5 feet near Greenville on May 18. The record is 58.20 set on May 12, 1973.
The river could crest at 51 feet near Vicksburg on May 20. Flood stage is 48 feet. Isle of Capri Casino workers there started making sandbags last week, just in case.
