William Carey University was breaking ground Thursday to begin construction of its new College of Osteopathic Medicine.
The school has received pre-accreditation for the program from the Commission on Osteopathic Accreditation.
William Carey officials plan to raise $20 million for the facility. Pledges of $1.5 million toward the startup costs have been received from individuals and foundations. A campaign is under way to raise more funds needed for initial construction and operation.
The osteopathic school, which was announced in March 2008, will be a four-year program with a residency.
The first class will start in 2010.
