Pearl River Central suffered another loss in Friday’s shut out game to Long Beach’s Bearcats. The final score was 20-0.
Friday the Devils’ biggest player was Jabar Locure with a 30 yard run, but the team failed to put points on the board. Two interceptions thrown by Devils quarterback Blake Herrin did not help the team’s chances at remedying that problem. The Bearcats focus on running the ball proved effective, even though two of their touchdowns were the result of passing plays. The third was a result of an intercepted toss up pass by Herrin.
The first quarter was essentially uneventful since no points were placed on the board. Only Locure’s 30 yard run put some spice in that quarter. It was not until the second quarter that Bearcat Taylor Boyd caught a pass from quarterback Jeremy Hill that went for 46-yards and a score. That touchdown and successful extra point left 10:01 still to play.
A second Bearcat touchdown would arise from a another PRC miscue as Herrin attempted to rid himself of the ball in the middle of a defensive Bearcat blitz. That mistake cost the Devils a first down and provided the Bearcats with an additional seven points as Cody Darty returned the interceptin for a score with two and a half minutes left on the clock after that play in the second quarter.
The final scoring play for the Bearcats took place in the final quarter of the game with 10:01 on the clock when Hill scored on a short run. Two failed extra point attempts, brought about by a roughing the kicker foul against the Devils on the first attempt, left the score at 20-0, which is where it stayed until the game was over.
Locure’s shining 30 yard run moment came in the first quarter, but it was all in vain as the team missed its chance to score four plays later due to a fumble, which lead to a turnover to the Bearcats.
Devils Head Coach Jeremy Weir took full responsibility for the team’s loss on Friday. He said he made a number of bad calls, placing players out of position.
“I’ll take this one all the way,” Weir said.
Only one game remains for the Blue Devils in this year’s season where they will take on St. Stanislaus on their home turf.
“We’re going to try for a win for the outgoing seniors,” Weir said.
The Bearcats will take on Picayune’s Maroon Tide in their second to last game of the season.
“They’re a team we have a great amount of respect for,” said Head Coach Sean Harden.
PRC ends the season at home Friday against St. Stanislaus and PRC is open the final week.
