The Gainesville Vols have erected a State-approved historical marker honoring Picayune’s only known Confederate company—the “Hancock Rebels”—at the Pearl River County Welcome Center.

After four years of effort, The Gainesville Volunteers, Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp 373, are proud to announce that they have installed a State-approved historical marker honoring Picayune’s only known Confederate company, the “Hancock Rebels”” (Co. C, 38th MS Infantry—Mounted), at the Pearl River County Welcome Center on I-59.  A formal dedication of the marker will be held at a later date. 

A special thanks goes to MDOT and the Welcome Center for their assistance with this project. 

The Mississippi 38th Infantry Regiment was formed during the summer of 1862 with men recruited in the counties of Holmes, Tishomingo, Alcorn, Wilkinson, Hancock, Harrison, Pearl River, and Marion.
