Parents interested in enrolling their child in the sixth annual Picayune Police Department summer camp should do so as soon as possible.

Applications will be accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis. The department will hold two separate weeks of the camp for two separate age groups, said Public Information Officer Capt. Theresa Milar.

Ages seven to nine will be able to attend the camp from June 9 to June 13. Ages 10 to 12 will be able to attend the camp from June 23 to June 27. Applications for the camps are available at the Picayune Police Criminal Justice Center on Main Street. Only 50 children will be accepted for each age group, Milar said.

“So get those applications in ASAP,” Milar said.

The camp will feature educational and fun programs including global wildlife trips, drug education and life choice classes. Children will be provided refreshments during the camp.

The camp is free to parents. Parents must provide proof of medical insurance, and the notarized application in order for their child to be eligible to participate in the camp, Milar said. All information must be provided before the camp starts, and only the first 50 in each age group will be eligible to attend.

Sponsors for the children are being sought by the department. Milar said businesses, individuals or private organizations interested in sponsoring a child can call her office at 601-798-6829 to donate. Sponsorships cost $50 per child and those interested can sponsor more than one child if they wish. More information about the camp can be found by calling the same number.

Milar said she hopes many sponsors take advantage of this opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children of the community.
