Work began on West Canal this past weekend but the work was delayed due to unfavorable weather.
Huey Stockstill Inc. was contracted to do the resurface work on West Canal and was given about 45 days to complete it. Last weekend the company was able to get the first of three phases complete.
Frank Ford with Huey Stockstill Inc. said that since the crew expected bad weather they put in some extra hours before daylight Sunday morning.
“We worked straight through Saturday night till 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning to reduce inconvenience to the motoring public,” Ford said.
The first phase completed during the wee hours of Sunday morning included milling up the original asphalt. The next phase is to do the leveling course, which will require dry conditions and temperatures of more than 50 degrees, Ford said.
“It’s a rough paving job is what it is,” Ford said.
Then the last phase of the resurfacing work will be the weathering phase, which gives the road its driving surface. Ford said they hope to have the work done within two weeks, given favorable conditions under which to work.
Motorists are asked to be patient while the resurfacing work is completed. Most businesses on West Canal have rear entrances that can be used while West Canal is closed.
