Inmate died at Highland

A previous article in the Picayune Item inaccurately stated that Evelyn J. Merrill, 54, of 717 Fourth St., Picayune passed away at Forrest General Hospital, when the inmate actually passed away at Highland Community Hospital.
“Recent reports have stated that a Pearl River County inmate died at Forrest General Hospital after being transported from Highland Community Hospital,” said Millie Swan, Director of Physician and Public Relations at Forrest General Hospital in an e-mail correspondence. “However, the patient was never transported to Forrest General, and did not die here.”
Deputy Chief Julie Flowers said she was told the inmate passed away at Forrest General Hospital after being transferred from Highland Community Hospital.
Flowers said Merrill actually passed away at Highland Community Hospital.
The mix up may have come due to Highland Community Hospital, formerly Crosby Memorial Hospital, being purchased by Forrest General Hospital recently, Flowers said.
Merrill passed away on Feb. 11 at about 11 a.m. due to hemorrhaging of the stomach due to sclerosis of the liver, according to the previous article.
