Pets are the embodiment of friendship, companionship and most of all responsibility.

The great thing about pets is there are so many kinds, with varying levels of needs. Independent people may consider a pet that is mostly self sufficient. Cats make great companions and are a good example of a relatively low maintenance pet. Fish can also make great low maintenance pets. A home aquarium can provide enjoyment without requiring substantial maintenance.

If loyalty is a trait a potential pet owner is looking for, a dog would be the best choice. They are intelligent, obedient and if raised properly great with children. However, they do require more care than fish or cats.

Anyone considering pet adoption should attend the Pearl River County SPCA’s Open House, set for March 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Pearl River County SPCA located on Palestine Road.

Dogs and cats can be adopted at reduced rates during this event. Cat adoption will cost $10 and dog adoption will cost $15.

The best part of this event is 100 low cost spay and neuter vouchers will be available. These vouchers offer the service at a significantly reduced price, $5 for cats and $10 for dogs. The full price to have a pet spayed or neutered easily exceeds $100.

Keep in mind only 100 of these vouchers will be offered during the event.

Why is it important to have your pet spayed or neutered? By doing so pet owners help keep the pet population low, and therefore unwanted pets are not brought to the animal shelter.

Kittens and puppies are cute, but most pet owners do not have enough financial and other resources to care for litters of newborn pets.

Later this month head out to the local SPCA and see if there is a new member you would like to add to your family.
