As the regular season winds down for prep basketball, it was a mixed bag of results for Pearl River County teams Tuesday night.
Both teams from Pearl River Central won, while both Picayune teams lost. And just to continue that theme, Poplarville split a par of games with North Forrest.
All of the local teams were on the road.
Pearl River Central swept into Vancleave and swept away the home team, as the Lady Devils picked up a 25-20 win over the Lady Bulldogs. Jessica Powers and Brandi Lee combined for PRC to be a twin terror against Vancleave, as Powers recorded a triple-double and Lee had a double-double.
Powers scored a game high 12 points, blocked 11 shots and grabbed 10 rebounds, while Lee scored 11 points and pulled down 10 boards as well.
In the boy’s game, the Blue Devils hammered the Bulldogs 65-35. Terek Whitehead poured in a game high 22 points to pace PRC, while Seth McCoy chipped in 15 points to the winning cause.
Both PRC teams host arch-rival Picayune Friday night to wrap up regular season action, and both Picayune teams are coming off losses headed into those match-ups.
Homestanding Biloxi swept Picayune Tuesday, as the Indians pulled off a 76-57 win and the Lady Indians beat the Lady Tide 54-45.
In the girls’ game, Maya Whitehead scored 14 points for Picayune, while Brandi Magee chipped in 11 points. Meanwhile, Poplarville’s boys won a thriller 62-61 over North Forrest. Anthony Martin tallied 18 points to pace Poplarville, while Devin Bonner chipped in 11 points to the winning cause.
Poplarville moved to 15-11 overall with the win.
The Lady Hornets dropped a close 37-34 decision to the Lady Eagles.
Tuesday’s games wrapped up regular season play for both Poplarville teams. Each will compete in the Region 8-4A Tournament next week in Bay St. Louis.
In other games of local interest Tuesday night, Maurice Stephens scored 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as West Harrison beat St. Martin 67-64 on Senior Night. Stephens’ 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left was the game-winner.
Harvey Smart added 10 and Julius Burkhalter had 10 for the Hurricanes, who finish the season at 23-2. West Harrison, which hosts the Region 7-5A Tournament next week, lost only to Picayune and Gulfport this year.
Also, Bay High’s Christa Reed poured in 20 points, including five 3-pointers, Tuesday night as the defending Class 4A state champion Lady Tigers turned back county rival Hancock 50-42 in the Tigerdome.
