Larry Elliott Watkins

Larry Elliott Watkins (September 4, 1947 – October 2, 2024) of Picayune, Miss., peacefully entered the kingdom of heaven on Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2024, at the age of 77. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie (Clark) Watkins of Picayune; his daughters, Suzanne (Eric) Stockstill of Hattiesburg and Janet (Wesley) Dickens of Oxford; and his two cherished grandchildren, Ethan Stockstill and Kate Dickens. Larry also leaves behind his brothers, Brian (Sandra) Watkins of Poplarville and Barry (Mary) Martyn of London, England, as well as many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elliott and Queenie May Watkins, and his sister, Brenda Blye.

Born on Sept. 4, 1947, Larry was raised in the Caesar community, where he developed his strong work ethic and deep-rooted faith. A dedicated member of Union Baptist Church, he later transferred to First Baptist Church of Picayune, where he served as a deacon and taught Sunday school for senior adults. His commitment to his faith and community was a reflection of his servant’s heart.

Larry graduated from Pearl River Central High School, where he excelled in football and was named Mr. Pearl River Central. He furthered his education at Pearl River
Community College and earned multiple degrees: a Bachelor’s in History and Social Studies Education and a Bachelor’s in Accounting from the University of Southern Mississippi, followed by a Master’s in Mathematics Education from William Carey University.

Early in his career, Larry taught Algebra and coached football in the Picayune and PRC School Districts. After more than a decade in education, he turned his focus to his
cement contracting business, which he successfully operated for nearly 40 years.

Larry was equally committed to public service, serving on the Picayune City Council in 1990 and later representing Mississippi’s District 108 in the state House of
Representatives. He returned to the City Council, serving from 2001 to 2013, continuing to work tirelessly for the community he loved.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at First Baptist Church of Picayune, Miss., on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2024. Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to
3:30 p.m., followed by the funeral at 3:30 p.m. In conclusion of the service, guests will proceed to the graveside.
