The MLK Day Parade and Ceremony unfolded on Monday, starting at 9:30 AM from Manna Ministries and traversing the streets of Picayune, concluding at the Rose Of Sharon Church of God. The event, featuring diverse participants and speakers, aimed to honor the legacy of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
The parade, a symbolic march through Picayune, concluded at the Rose Of Sharon Church of God, hosting a service to honor Mr. King’s impact on the community. Notable figures in attendance included the 2024 Grand Marshals, Dr. Pamela Thomas, and Mr. Leavern Guy.
Dr. Pamela Thomas: A Pillar of Education
Dr. Pamela Thomas, the 2024 Grand Marshal, is a highly accomplished educator, serving as the Director of Early Childhood for the Picayune School District Head Start/Early Head Start and State Pre-K Programs. Her educational journey includes a Doctorate of Education in Child, Youth, & Human Studies from NOVA Southeastern University, focusing on program management.
Mr. Leavern Guy: Guided by Faith and Civic Leadership
Mr. Leavern Guy, the 2024 Grand Marshal, emphasized the role of faith in his life and highlighted his entrepreneurial ventures through Guy Enterprises. As a dedicated husband, father, and community leader, Mr. Guy has made significant contributions to Picayune, previously serving as City Councilman/Mayor Protemp and holding leadership positions in organizations such as the NAACP.
Jasmine Cochran: MLK Speaker Making Global Impact
The event featured former Picayune Memorial High School graduate Mrs. Jasmine Cochran, an author, speaker, and international educator. Cochran, a record-breaking high jumper and Academic All-American at Mississippi State University, served as the MLK speaker. She shared her experiences and commitment to the humanities.
Speaking at the event, Cochran expressed her excitement and gratitude for being part of a community that continues to honor MLK’s legacy through parades and traditions. She urged the younger generation to embrace their roots and learn from those before them.
