Sales tax collections in Picayune, Poplarville holding steady in spite of COVID-19

Sales tax collected by retailers in April was up from the previous year for both the city of Picayune and Poplarville.
Picayune should receive a diversion of $433,908 in June from sales tax collected in April, compared to the $425,754 it received in the same month during 2019. The city will be receiving less in sales tax diversions than it did in May, $442,232, for sales collected in March.
Poplarville should receive a diversion of $87,225 in June from sales tax collected in April, compared to the $86,436 it received in the same month in 2019. The city will be receiving less in sales tax diversions than it did in May, $93,116, for sales collected in March.
Sales tax diversions to cities across the state of Mississippi are down from 2019. Cities across the state will receive $34.8 million for sales tax collected in April compared to $37.6 million in 2019.
For fiscal year 2020 through May, Pearl River County has had gross sales of $976.9 million and retail trade has made up the largest portion of those sales with $563 million in gross sales.
