Picayune School District’s Board of Trustees recognized four people for their assistance with recent school related events.

During Tuesday’s meeting, Josh Braddy, Donnie Pascal and Geri Grubbs were recognized for their assistance in putting on a presentation for the teachers before the beginning of the school year.

Board President Frank Ford said he attended the event and was moved by what the speakers had to say.

The Board also recognized Lorenzo Breland for holding the ninth annual Back 2 School Bash, which provided 120 backpacks full of school supplies to local children.

Breland said he started the event to help the students understand that academics is just as important as athletics or other after school functions. He plans to hold the event again next year. Superintendent Dean Shaw said that Breland also spoke to the children about the importance of being a good student and person during the event.

In other business, the Board approved a motion to reduce next year’s ad valorem request from the city of Picayune by $158,000. According to previous coverage, of the District’s total $35.8 million budget, about $10 million was expected to come from local sources, including ad valorem taxes. District Finance Director Lisa Persick said the change was needed to keep the District within its current millage rate, which is currently capped.

In other business the Board:

— Accepted a grant for the fresh fruit and vegetable program, which will provide fresh fruit and vegetables to students at all five elementary schools three days a week.
