Residents in and around Picayune are invited to attend, or participate in, the annual Veterans Day Parade.
This year, the event will be held on Thursday, Nov. 8, starting at 6 p.m.
Tom Milar, code enforcement officer for the city of Picayune, is organizing this year’s event, and said that the parade will begin at Crosby Commons, head down Goodyear Boulevard toward U.S. 11, before taking a right on the highway. From there, the parade will turn onto West Canal Street head to Kirkwood where the route will end back at Crosby Commons.
Milar said the route is short to accommodate the veterans who will be walking in the parade.
Participants in the parade so far will be a number of local veterans, in addition to the Coast Watchers, which Milar said is a group of antique military vehicles. Those vehicles will be in the parade, along with classic cars from the Boulevard Cruisers. Some motorcycles from the American Legion Riders are also expected to ride in the parade. Some horses ridden by members of the Pearl River County 4H Club will also participate.
Participation in the parade is free. Milar said that anyone interested in riding in the parade can do so by showing up at Crosby Commons at 5 p.m. The only stipulation is that participants bring candy to throw to the children who will line the route.
Prior to the parade at 5 p.m., Boy Scout Troop 2 in Picayune will retire worn out American flags near the historic side of City Hall. Anyone who has a flag that needs to be retired can bring it to the event and donate it to the Boy Scout troop.
