The annual “Thunder in the Pearl” Rodeo, a longstanding tradition in Pearl County, commenced its latest iteration over the weekend, attracting families from nearby and distant areas for a display of cowboy skills and entertainment.
Established in 2008, the rodeo has become a fixture in the community, providing a family-friendly environment for attendees of all ages. The county administration supports this tradition by distributing complimentary tickets to all students up to the 6th grade, promoting family participation.
With a rich history in the rodeo circuit, both locally and nationally, Pearl County takes pride in its rodeo heritage. Despite logistical challenges, the rodeo committee ensures a smooth operation, with an estimated budget of approximately $20,000 spanning two days.
While “Thunder in the Pearl” Rodeo offers attractions aimed at families, such as the calf scramble where children chase after calves for prizes, it also functions as a sanctioned Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) event. Contestants compete vigorously for prizes, striving to improve their rankings and earn national recognition.
The rodeo features a variety of events showcasing participants’ talents across different rodeo disciplines. From Bull Riding to Tie Down Roping and Barrel Racing, spectators witness displays of athleticism and skill.
Reggie Purvis, a familiar figure at the rodeo, provides entertainment with his humor, adding to the lively ambiance of the event.
