Funeral service will be held Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James United Methodist
Church, 322 Martin Luther King Drive, Purvis, MS. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
Rev. Ricardo McNair will officiate the services. Interment will be at the Purvis Community Cemetery,
MLK Drive, Purvis, MS.
Mr. John Lewis Beck, 79, was born March 3, 1944 in Purvis, MS to the late Reverend Walter and
Rosie Lee Shelby Beck. John is a graduate of John Jefferson High School, Class of 1964. After
High School, John attended Pearl River Junior College, Poplarville, MS.
John served as a Trustee at the Spring Chapel Baptist Church. He was very instrumental in
forming the District Male Chorus, consisting of men from various churches.
John worked for Hess Oil Company for 10 years. John had a passion for his community baking
lemon pies and chili beans.
John made his transition on Wednesday, January 10, 2024 at his home. John was preceded in
death by his parent, Reverend Walter and Rosie Lee Beck; son, John F, Beck.
Memories of John will be lived and cherished by his children, Jentri T. Beck (Neice), James
“Chuck” Payne (Diane), Carl Payne (Zena), Brandon G. Beck (Melissa), Brian E. Beck, Carla
Haynes (Theodore), Beverly Ray Gatling (Elder Arnold), Maranda Tillman Davis (Kevin), and
Lachina T. Ozment (Joseph); sister, Gloria Beck McNair (James); grandchildren, Isaiah Davis,
Elijah Davis, Rachel Davis, Aaron Tillman, Kevin Davis, Jr., Janae, Joshua and Alexa Beck, Mia
Sylve, Torrin and Tekalon Gatlin; best friends, Sue Ann and C. J. Rawls; and a host of nephews,
nieces, other relatives and friends.
