For more than 75 years, the Rotary Club of Picayune has provided meals to the less fortunate through its Christmas basket effort.
The food was collected in a team effort that included students in the Picayune School District.
Tuesday morning, members of the club along with students at Picayune Memorial High School gathered in the auto mechanics shop to sort the food items and pack boxes with canned goods, dried beans, apples, a ham and a loaf of bread, in addition to other food.
This year, as in year’s past, students in the junior varsity cheerleading team, Career and Technology automotive course and Lady Tide softball team assisted in packing each of the 100 boxes Tuesday morning.
Recipients of the boxes picked up their food donations the same day.
Rotary Club of Picayune member Suzan Wilson said that Rotary donated $2,600 to purchase the perishable food items,
Any food that could not fit in the boxes was donated to Christian Care Ministries for use in the organization’s food pantry.
Names of families in need of the boxes were acquired by Rotary members from a local charity organization, Wilson said.
