Families looking for a fun and festive event to enjoy the cooler weather will be interested in the city of Picayune’s Christmas at the Commons.
Saturday, two movies will be shown at Crosby Commons. The first movie is The Santa Clause starring Tim Allen, which will start at 3 p.m. At 6 p.m. the movie Elf staring Will Farrell will be shown.
City of Picayune Grants Administrator Christy Goss said that the event will also feature a tree lighting ceremony conducted by Mayor Ed Pinero at 5 p.m. The ceremony will light a Christmas tree and all of the other decorations across Crosby Commons at the same time.
Food vendors from local businesses will also be at the event.
Goss said that students from South Side Upper Elementary will be selling nachos as part of a fundraiser. Susan Spiers, the school’s gifted teacher, said the funds will be used for a school project that will benefit a local charity.
Spiers said she used the fundraiser as a way to teach the children how to budget to hold a fundraising effort. That meant the students had to determine how much ingredients would be needed to sell the nachos and the cost to purchase them.
Popcorn will be provided at the event. There will also be games and candy canes provided, Goss said.
“It’s a fun family event that you can do with your family at little to no cost,” Goss said.
