Another tax-free holiday is right around the corner and will allow Mississippi residents to purchase shoes and clothing sales tax-free.
According to a guide by the Mississippi Department of Revenue, this year’s sales tax holiday will run from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, July 27 to midnight on Saturday, July 28. Any eligible article of clothing under $100 per item that is purchased during that time within participating Mississippi municipalities will be exempt from the normal 7 percent sales tax.
Picayune Mayor Ed Pinero said the city of Picayune will be participating in the tax holiday this year.
Bonnie Blue Boutique by Paula owner Paula Spiers said her business participates in the sales tax holiday every year. She said they have a lot of customizable clothing for the upcoming school year.
“It’s a time we would love for all our customers to come out and take advantage of deals while saving money at the same time,” Spiers said.
April’s of Picayune manager Paula Mendoza said they will also be participating during the tax holiday. She said they participate yearly. During the rest of the week, April’s will be giving customers 7% off anything school related, as part of their own “tax-free week.” She said included items as those listed by MDR, as well as accessories and backpacks.
According to the MDR guide, certain items of clothing – such as accessories – are not eligible for the discount. Non-eligible items include hair bows, jewelry, purses, watches, bibs, backpacks, sunglasses, wallets and several other items.
Items that are included in the holiday consist of dresses, pants, pajamas, raincoats, socks, slippers, sweaters, swimsuits, ties, shoes and a few other articles. A full list can be found on the official Sales Tax Holiday guide.
