Highland Community Hospital is hosting its sixth annual Time Out for Kidz safety fair on June 2.
Colleen Latimer, Highland’s healthcare recruiter and organizer for the event, said the hospital holds the safety fair at the beginning of summer as part of its community outreach program to promote childhood safety.
She said it was started in response to the increasing number of childhood injuries reported in the ER. Topics addressed during the event will include bicycle safety, boating safety, ATV safety, swimming safety, gun safety, poison control, animal and material safety and more, Latimer said.
Families will also have a chance to see inside emergency vehicles including fire trucks, police cars and an ambulance helicopter, Latimer said.
Participants of the event will get a chance to enter a raffle to win one of eight bicycles, three ATV helmets and life jackets. Other activities will include face painting and photo booths. Refreshments will include lemonade and popcorn.
Latimer said the event drew about 250 children and their parents last year.
Picayune Police Department, Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department, Mississippi Poison Control, Mississippi Farm Bureau Insurance and Early Head Start will also participate in the event.
Latimer said it’s important to educate children about safety due to the large number of outdoor activities engaged in during the summer.
The Time Out for Kidz safety fair will be held in the parking lot of the hospital and last from 9 a.m. to noon.
