BBQ plates to benefit students

Picayune Memorial High School’s Security Council is in the process of raising funds to provide a scholarship to fellow students.

Major Chad Dorn with the Picayune Police Department, said the fundraiser will involve a barbecue lunch, tickets for which are currently available for purchase.

Dorn said the lunch is $10 per plate, and comes with a pulled pork sandwich, baked beans, potato salad and a bottle of water.

All funds raised will be put into the Brian Goetzmann Memorial Scholarship Fund.

Goetzmann passed away in August of 2015. He was a city employee in various capacities for almost 30 years prior to his death. The last position he held was a security officer for the Picayune School District, where he could be seen interacting with many students on a daily basis.

Dorn said the fund was started last year, so the Council expects to be able to provide at least one $500 scholarship. But as the fund grows, there is a possibility that more scholarships can be provided to more students.

Tickets can be purchased from Dorn at the Picayune Memorial High School or from a Campus Security Council member until May 7. The lunch will be held on May 10 at Crosby Commons from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Dorn said that anyone who is unable to purchase a ticket before May 7, can still walk up the day of the lunch and buy a plate.
