Local teams advance in playoffs

POPLARVILLE — Poplarville’s softball team swept Mendenhall 2-0 in the play-in series of the Class 4A state playoffs.
On Friday, the Lady Hornets won 12-1 and Saturday, the team won 10-1. Poplarville (18-7) will face Newton County in the next round. Game one will take place Tuesday at Poplarville at 6 p.m. and game two will be at Newton County on Thursday at 6 p.m. If needed, game 3 will start minutes later after game two concludes.
Poplarville baseball — Poplarville moves on to the second round of the Class 4A state playoffs after sweeping Florence 2-0 in a best two-out-of-three series.
Friday night, the Hornets won 4-2 in extra innings and Saturday, Poplarville won 11-0.
Poplarville will face the winner of the Vancleave-Mendenhall series in the second round.
Picayune softball — Picayune’s softball team has advanced to the next round of the Class 5A state playoffs following a 2-0 series win against Natchez.
The Lady Tide won game one 13-0 and game two 10-0.
Picayune (6-19) will face West Harrison in the next round. Game one is set to take place Tuesday, at 6 p.m. at Picayune. Game two will be played at West Harrison Thursday, April 26.
