The Pearl River County Soccer Club will host its first winter games tournament next month.
The event will take place Dec. 9 and 10 and all the games will be played at Friendship Park in Picayune.
“We are looking to expand the sport of soccer in our community,” PRSC President Kim Williams said. “We have invited teams from Louisiana and southern Mississippi so I’m excited to see the turnout that we’ll have.”
The tournament is open to recreational teams for both boys and girls in the Under-10 and Under-12 age groups. The entry fee is $300 for all ages. Teams will be guaranteed to compete in a minimum of three games during the tournament.
“Our goal is to build a feeder program to the middle schools and high schools in Pearl River County,” Williams said. “We want kids to fall in love with the sport at an early age, so we try to get them to play as early as possible.”
The PRSC is also seeking sideline and field sponsors for the tournament. The sideline sponsorship includes a 10 by 10 canopy that will be setup at the field so sponsors can pass out information about their business. If a business decides to obtain a field sponsorship, one of the eight fields will be named after them, Williams said.
The cost of a sideline sponsorship is $40 and a field sponsorship is $100.
PRSC is home to soccer teams for both boys and girls between the Under-six and Under-19 age groups, Williams said.
According to its website, PRSC’s mission is to foster the physical, mental and emotional growth and development of the community’s youth through the sport of soccer at all levels of age and competition.
PRSC is in the process of creating an adult soccer league, where anyone over the age of 18 can participate. The fee for any new player who wants to join is $70. The fee will cover the insurance, a jersey and referees, Williams said.
The season will last approximately eight games and the games will take place on Sunday afternoons at Friendship Park in Picayune.
“In order to see how many people will participate in our adult league, we are currently holding pickup games on Sunday afternoons around 4 p.m. at Friendship Park,” Williams said. “We had over 10 adults show up last week and I hope we can get more out there next time. We have a $20 fee to participate in the pickup games and also a $5 fee to cover the payment of the referees.”
