The Carriere Masonic Lodge will hold a St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital fundraiser Saturday that will feature a car and motorcycle show.
This year’s event will feature fish or chicken plates, live music by Rock the Flock and allow attendees of the event to judge the car and motorcycle show, said Carriere Masonic Lodge Treasurer Marion Necaise.
He said this annual event raised $4,000 the first year it was held three to four years ago. Last year the event brought in $6,500, which was enough for nine families. Necaise hopes to double that amount this year.
“It’s unreal how our community helps out for a charity event,” Necaise said. “If we had more towns like ours in the country, I think we’d be a lot better off.”
If the event raises $15,000, Necaise said at least 10 members of the Lodge have agreed to shave their heads at the end of Saturday’s event.
“There’s about 10 of us that said we would shave our heads if we raised $15,000,” Necaise said.
Plates of food will be sold for $10 per plate beginning at 11 a.m. Food will be sold until it’s gone. Registration for the car and motorcycle show will be $10, and will begin at 9 a.m.
Last year the event brought in about 20 cars and seven bikes just by advertising the event with word of mouth. But this year, the group has put forth more effort into marketing the event, so they expect a lot more cars, motorcycles and participation, Necaise said.
Judging of the vehicles will begin at 1:30 p.m. and be conducted by attendees of the event, who will issue the People’s Choice Award. Necaise said there will even be a Kid’s Choice Award.
T-shirts with the names of sponsors will also be on sale during the event. All sizes up to extra large will cost $12, while sizes 2X and larger will be $15.
Each year the event is held during the month of September because it’s Child Cancer Awareness Month.
All of the proceeds raised during the event will be donated to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Necaise said the Bloodmobile will also be on hand during Saturday’s event beginning at 10 a.m.
The lodge is located at 8 West Union Road, Carriere.
