Described as the only hair salon in Poplarville on a second floor, the Loft Salon opened its doors last week welcoming its first clients.
“I never dreamed I’d own a salon,” owner Dawn Stuit said.
Located on the second floor of the Best Choice Realty and Nationwide Insurance building in downtown Poplarville, the sun-filled loft has individual rooms for experienced cosmetologists Hannah Davis and Sadie Bordelon-Herring to offer haircuts, coloring and styling.
“They’re passionate about what they do,” Stuit said.
She opened the salon with the idea of creating a place for women to pamper themselves on the weekend, Stuit said.
“It’s hard to find someplace to do that kind of thing, especially for people working all the time,” Stuit said.
She said she hopes the salon will continue to grow, adding amenities such as massage chairs and spa treatments.
“Every salon has its own personality,” Stuit said.
With private suites for each client and a quiet waiting room, Stuit said the aim was to “glam” the building up.
Stuit said she owns the building, including her real estate business downstairs and an apartment next door to the salon. The area where the salon operates used to be a boarding house, Stuit said, and was vacant for years.
The renovation took over a month to complete, which included removing old drywall, trash and installing new wiring and plumbing, Stuit said.
Davis and Bordelon designed their own rooms, Stuit said, purchasing items from local shops.
“I prayerfully considered going forward with this,” she said. “I never had any doubt about it.”
Though Stuit is not a cosmetologist and has never been known to “pamper herself,” she said opening the salon has “fulfilled one of my dreams.”
Even though the business has only been open for a week, Stuit said each stylist already has a steady flow of new customers from walk-ins and appointments.
The Loft Salon, located at 100 B West Beers Street in Poplarville, is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment, call 601-463-2151.
