Job seekers will be able to receive computer training at any of the two libraries within the Pearl River County Library System that can help them land their dream job.

The local libraries recently partnered with the Mississippi State University Extension Service to hold computer classes for job seekers starting this month that will last until November.

Phyllis Gage, head cataloguer and IT specialist for the libraries, said it’s been years since they have been able to offer computer classes for adults due to budgetary constraints.

“This is something we’ve been wanting to do because people do ask for this and it’s important that they know how to use computers to find a job,” Gage said.

The free computer classes will be offered at the Margaret Reed Crosby Memorial and Poplarville libraries twice a month.

The first series of computer classes will focus on helping people search and apply for jobs using computers. Gage said the first class will teach participants how to use the computer, Internet and email during their job search; the second class will focus on preparing professional cover letters and resumes; the third class will teach people how to utilize job search engines.

Picayune’s library plans to hold their classes on Sept. 9, Oct. 14 and Nov. 4. The Poplarville library will hold classes on Sept. 16, Oct. 21 and Nov. 18. Classes begin at 10 a.m.

Gage encourages the community to contact them if they would like to see a particular class held at the library in the future.

Next year, they plan to hold more computer classes.

“We hope this will be a long partnership between the libraries and the extension service,” Gage said.
