Numerous puppies are searching for a home in Pearl River County. In order to find them a forever home, the Pearl River County SPCA will host their first Puppy Shower on Saturday, offering 50 percent off puppy adoptions.

In the past, the shelter has hosted numerous kitten showers in response to the large number of kittens they receive during breeding season, PRC SPCA President Maria Diamond said.

“We saw how fun those showers were for the community so we decided to do one for the puppies,” Diamond said.

From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., locals can get 50 percent off when they adopt any puppy at the shelter. The regular prices on each puppy vary. Dog adoptions typically range from $110 to $150; purebred dogs cost $150.

There will also be refreshments, door prizes and raffle tickets, where participants can win prizes like animal toys and a puppy goody basket for $1 per ticket or $5 for six tickets, Diamond said.

The shelter will also hold a raffle for a chance to win a custom-made dog bed. Participants can donate $5 to $20 for one ticket, $21 to $40 for two tickets, $41 to $60 for three tickets, $61 to $80 for four tickets and over $81 for six tickets, Diamond said.

Each adoption includes spaying and neutering, all the necessary shots, flea control and microchipping. All adopted puppies come with a bag of Science Diet puppy food and 30 days of free health insurance, Diamond said.

In conjunction with the shower, the shelter will also hold a dog wash, where pet owners can get their dogs washed for $5. Credit cards and cash are acceptable forms of payment. Owners are encouraged to bring their own towel.

Diamond said the shelter’s staff will screen potential adoptees before any adoption is finalized to ensure the puppy and interested party are the right fit for one another.

“We try to match the right breed of puppy with the right person. Certain breeds might fit their lifestyles better,” Diamond said.
