The Pearl River County Board of Supervisors plans to properly mark all county vehicles.

At Monday’s board meeting, the supervisors agreed to place county seals on unmarked and incorrectly labeled vehicles after District II Supervisor Malcolm Perry said Mississippi state law requires counties to do so.

“I looked up the law and realized that some of the vehicles, like my county truck, are only marked on the side and not the rear, which is required by the state,” Perry said.

According to Mississippi Code of 1972, Section 25-1-87, “All motor vehicles owned or leased by the State of Mississippi or any agency, department or political subdivision thereof, which shall include counties and municipalities…shall have painted on both sides in letters at least three inches in height, and on the rear in letters not less than one and one-half inches in height.”

The only vehicles exempt from the rule are those associated with the Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department. Those vehicles can remain unmarked as long as they’re listed in the board minutes, Perry said.

He said the county expects to have all county vehicles properly marked by the end of next week.
